Imagine, if you can, a roomful of teenage boys, all familiar with the inside of a courtroom; many are gang members, many are from the roughest home environments you might conjure up from having seen some pretty horrible movies. Many of those kids have experienced years of academic failure. Their guards are up so that no teacher, no test will be allowed to expose their shortcomings. They are accustomed to failing and to public embarrassment—both elements of their dislike of school.
And then comes Friday Poem Day—a tradition that has become a centerpiece for kids who are trying to find ways to express their feelings about the harshness and confusion of their lives. These teenagers, given time with Mary Sklar and her special brand of imparting to them a belief in themselves and encouraging them to dare anything to succeed, found themselves in their rooms late into the evening on Thursday memorizing poems by such authors as Maya Angelou and John Donne. They then recite these poems to a classful of other teenage boys—not a wisecrack or snort is heard—and the prize they receive is a miniature Snickers bar.
After a student successfully recites a poem, he comes to the front of the classroom and drops rolls of pennies into a donation bucket—each year a different charity is selected related to education. He earns the pennies by choosing one of the longer poems on the list of options. Even though the pennies come from a fund established by the teacher, the boy feels so proud to be able, by his own effort, to help kids who are less fortunate than he with a charitable contribution. His name is added to the list of humanitarians on the classroom door. Other students congratulate him, often accompanied by applause. The most common statement heard from students as they drop their pennies into the bucket is “Oh Miss, I wish my mother could see me. She’d be so proud.” Apathy, not common in room 101, is totally absent on Friday.

How Do We Reach Those Kids Creating Places of Belonging Where Everyone Learns and Thrives eBook Mary Sklar Reviews

It is a must read for anyone who has accepted the challenge of salvaging juvenile lives gone far astray. The book lays out Mrs. Sklar's technique for peeling back the tough layers of hurt and negative attitude that landed these kids where they are.. Mrs. Sklar then lays out her system or method of rebuilding their lives and confidence. Mary lays out ways to uncover their talents so that even they realize, perhaps for the first time, that they are special and have a lot to live for. Trying to salvage a juvenile's life within the confines of a jail is probably a low percentage business. This is where this book is especially helpful. There is good counsel for the teacher as well on how deal with those times when self doubt sets in that you are getting through to these kids? Mary has been through that too and gives you good counsel on how to maintain your own sanity and confidence through these discouraging times. To the teacher who is going into this field, I would say this. This is more than a 'how to' book. This little tome will be your dear friend. Keep it close to you. You will call upon it often for assurance and advice and it will not let you down.
Mary Sklar's personal and inspirational account offers a clear and practical way to reach "those kids." Actually, her methods would be valuable for teaching all kids. Through her own experiences and use of student writings, she radiates respect, positivity and caring. Her class are relevant and safe which helps her to engage her students, things that are necessary today especially. Mary includes a wide variety of activities that all teachers could use to enrich their classrooms, and her use of student writings gives readers an honest view of those who need honesty and real relationships the most. Her engaging teaching style has given hope and paths to success to those kids who have never known what was possible in their lives. As a career teacher and a believer in the methods Mary has used, I believe this should be required reading for every teacher. We CAN reach these kids, and this heartfelt book can show the way!
(I am a children's book author and have read lots on young people's education, but nothing like this. I'm giving this book for Christmas to the teachers I most admire.)

How Do We Reach These Kids is a short book on teaching damaged adolescents who are turned off to education and to life itself. It's packed with practical ideas which will stimulate teachers to find their own new answers for working with all students. The essence of Ms. Sklar's approach is her vision. Teaching teenagers in what we used to call "reform school" --actually a much more hopeful designation than the current "detention center," she finds ways to clearly show her respect for every student, She never ridicules any. She insists on students respecting each other, too. She has special ways of making goals real and redirecting students from tough talk, fear if failure, and despair, toward hope and growth. Nurtured in her classroom, one seventeen-year-old wrote this

The Power Pyramid

If I am a girl in a detention center, if I am a girl who has dropped out of school, I am at the bottom of the power pyramid. How can I move up in this pyramid of power? I must realize that life is choices. I can make changes that will move me up on that pyramid.

I can get an education.
I can care about others in addition to myself.
I can make a difference in this world.
I can choose behaviors that will help me succeed.
I can choose friends who will help me succeed.
I can help others who have less than I.

Even if now I am at the bottom of the power pyramid, I can find a path that will lead me upward. I will find that path.
Very inspiring! As a teacher, I look forward to implementing these realistic ideas and tools in my classroom. This book is a must read for all teachers!. It will allow you realize that there are ways to reach our students!
Many good tips for connecting with the students that may be difficult to motivate. These ideas should be valuable to educational professionals as well as the average parent.
Excellent book! This book should be a part of every teacher's training. Well written, great ideas without the usual fluff. Mary's writing is full of wisdom with a healthy dose of common sense. I highly recommend it!
