To Stand In The Light edition by Kayla Bashe Klaudia Drabikowska Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
This story is great in so many ways. It deals with, and shows, disabilities in an amazing way, it has a richly diverse cast and it has an agender superhero as a main character! The only problem is that the writing style is a little wierd, but that shouldn't deter someone from reading this amazing and emotional book.
Confession time I have a serious weakness for age-gap romances and people recovering from not feeling like they're worthy of love. From the moment I saw a description of this book I knew it was going to be like Kryptonite for me. (Also, I got a free copy for reviewing - but then I lost it, and then I decided 'eh, whatever, support your local provider of incredibly cute queer romance' and just bought a copy. Worth it!)
The only missing star is due to superhero stories being very spotty at striking chords with me - I don't know what it is. I love the concepts, but superheroics have a hard time holding my interest on paper. Most of the story did just fine with me, though; Shadow and Bean are both endearing as all heck, and it's great to see a romance start small and then slowly grow as they write letters, meet between missions, and hopelessly fall in love. It's also incredibly refreshing to see PTSD and ADHD both show up and be treated realistically and well!
Plus, even as someone who doesn't gel great with most superhero stories, I loved the badass moments and the various powers characters wielded. And... I'll have to admit I might have developed a small crush on Shadow.
Every moment of the book had me hooked, even though at the beginning I was confused when shadow was refered to them. But the book itself was cute, you just have to love Bean's happy and bubbly personality and her seemingly endless amount of energy. I like how the two fragile and shattered characters heal each other and find love a long the way. The book had some honestly adorable moments that would have had me throwing up rainbows if I could. I would rate this a thousand out of ten, I freaking love this book!😄
great queer superhero story
the characters are well written and flawed and they work with their flaws in the best ways. Read for cute happy couple and for life lessons
negatives the editing in the book can get a little wonky and there is not a lot of transition space when the scenes switch, which can be jarring
I really loved this book. I bought it for the clearly nonbinary main character and superheros, and it had far more diverse representation than I had thought to want and tackled a lot of unexpected issues in sensitive, thoughtful and wonderful ways. It deals with some heavy and dark topics, but manages to stay cute, sweet, and hopeful. The world itself is a blend of the commonplace and the quirky-fantastical, and sure there's some suspense and action throughout the story, but this book is at its heart a story about the two main characters, exploring their relationship as well as their own personal struggles. I don't think I've ever read a published work of fiction with such a unique blend of poc, disabled, mogai, and neurodivergent characters; and I certainly haven't read one wherein neurodivergence was talked about so openly and so well. For those two elements alone, I heartily recommend this book.
It's interesting to think about superheroes who can control light and shadow and have all these amazing powers but still have to come to terms with accepting medical help to manage everyday problems like ADD and PTSD. Makes them kind of adorably human. The worry that the people you like and love best are just tolerating you is all too common, so the two leads are very relatable. It's also creative to have a relationship between someone with power over light and someone with power over shadows and darkness. And, hey, cool, it's not your typical "all white except for the black guy who dies" cast, either! There are actual women of color doing superhero things. Several of them, including one of the leads!
This book is a sweet, colorful, energetic romp through an alternate world where superheroes fight internal battles with anxiety and trauma at the same time as they confront corrupt cops, flesh-eating aliens, and old allies gone bad. Watching main characters Shadow and Bean (code names Darkling and Neon Nova) share the strange experience of being teenage metahumans and build a mutually supportive friendship that blossoms into love is touching and satisfying. The characters' friendships and connections with each other feel detailed and genuine, and the little background facts and stories that surround the main plot - research bases on remote planets, Venusian psychiatrists, antimatter pigeons - make the world of the book feel rich, extending far past one's view.
If you've ever felt like your race, ability, mental health, or gender identity have cut you out of common narratives of heroism, magic, and fantasy, this is the book for you. This is a book where superheroes sometimes take anxiety meds specially matched to their metahuman genetics, or wear heavy hoods to deal with sensory overload at parties. The story approaches experiences like abusive families and PTSD with a careful, loving touch, anchoring tough themes to vibrant characters who make the plot's painful moments bearable. The perfect balance of sweet and bitter, this is a nontraditional superhero romance you won't want to put down.
To Stand in the Light is a fantastic, energetic, fun read which I can enthusiastically recommend to a diverse audience. The fast pace can feel a little rushed at first, because this book gets a lot done in a short time, but by the end, it feels good and right that it accomplishes its goals with so little delay and hesitation.
